Behind
a simple phrase: “the architectural complex of the Holy Trinity New Golutvin
monastery was handed over to the Russian Orthodox church in1989” the background
of its revival is veiled as it began with Khotkovo. Long before this event with
the blessing of elders a group of sisters strived with hope for opening of a
convent in Russia, wherefore there wasn’t any convent in Russia till 1988. There
was an idea: to ask Metropolitan Yuvenaly for opening of a convent in Khotkovo.
Later on, recollecting this, he told Hegumene
Xenia:
- I remember very well your
visit to me at that time. In a red jacket, with children's carved toys, with a
pack of
candles made by sisters, and with the
request to help to open a convent. My heart was breaking. What could I do
then?
On the eve of the
1000th anniversary of Christening of Russia the attitude to the
Church changed. The St. Daniel monastery and the first convent on the Tolga were
opened anew. As we now understand, an unexpected call from the eparchy and the
invitation to come on reception changed our life.
- Do you know there is a
possibility to establish a convent in Kolomna now? Can you organize monastic
life there? – Metropolitan asked me.
- Why? Why in Kolomna? It
would be better in Khotkovo, - Mother Superior objected not understanding then
that in any case she was to go to Kolomna.
- They won’t hand over the
monastery in Khotkovo. Go and have a look at Kolomna, - he explained patiently.
“And exactly on the following day I went “on investigation” - Mother Superior
recollects.
“That’s how we started going
to Kolomna, up to the moment when all complex of the
convent wasn’t finally officially handed over. Monastic cut and Hegumene
consecration were serious marks of our new
life, and our creative break that changed the territory of the convent surprised
both church-goers, and journalists”- Hegumene
Xenia
continues.
“In broad daylight the
convent resembled a colony of strays of the first years of the Soviet authority
- an popular image in our historical cinema. The huge courtyard surrounded from
all sides with stone buildings of the XVII - XVIII centuries, sheds; woodpiles
of fire wood, abundance of modestly dressed youth busily scurrying there - here.
That’s how the present Holy Trinity New Golutvin convent looked at that time.
“"Abomination of desolation" which has reigned here up to this summer, is a
result of the activity of various official bodies and enterprises, that have
occupied the territory of a former monastery for more than 60 years”.
(M.Kopylova).
Mother Xenia goes on
telling:
“Builders who
restored the buildings and their chiefs who planned the future premises showed
total misunderstanding of what the convent should be like.
- And where will be a
guardroom? - Paul Petrovich, the head of construction works asked.
- And what is the need for a
guardroom to us? - I decided to specify.
- Where are you going to
send guilty nuns?
And not only builders, but
also excursions, looking at sisters, exchanged words:
- Look, how beautiful she
is! Why did she go here?
Visitors peered into faces,
searching in the eyes reflecting patches of light burning candles
and
icon-lamps the "temporal" answer to a question: “Why have these young women
refused our worldly life? Why have they chosen the unique way – conventual life
- from a great variety of different ways?..”
Conventual life required
great works because we still lacked building skills, as well as wise
housekeeping.
But, nevertheless, sisters
brought order to cluttered up territory, pulled
down sheds and helped local residents to
move to new places because this "unsuccessful" small corner
of Kolomna was populated by so-called
"unsuccessful" inhabitants that were inveterate drunkards and
invalids.
The first services in the
Holy Trinity church marked the beginning of a marvelous dispensation – the
development of monastic life in Kolomna. The first sisters - in long
clothes, with beds in
their hands, amazed with their internal austerity and affability at
the same time. Local authorities got additional troubles. Many outstanding
figures of culture and politics got interested in the convent, the number of
visitors increased every year, and they began to understand, that the convent,
being so popular, is a city’s glorious place of interest.
In 1992 - Head of
the American Orthodox Church, visited the convent. Bishop Gregory of Mozhaysk
addressed him with such words:
- Your Beatification! You
are the first head of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church to visit this holy place
after its restoration and revival. The big conventual community under
the
leadership of Hegumene
Xenia
have been living and working hard here with a purpose of its revival and
restoration for three years now. A lot has been done since the time when the
first group of nuns came here in February icy cold. Then there was no place to
spend the night here, as all was destroyed. These works seem to be endless, but
nevertheless we see big results of these earnest efforts made so diligently by
young nuns.
We listened with pleasure to
a word of Metropolitan Theodosius to the sisters in the St. Xenia of Petersburg
church:
- I am very thankful to His
Holiness, as he invited me to participate in the big feast that will take place
next week - the 600th anniversary of
St. Sergius. With the blessing and
invitation of Metropolitan Yuvenaly whom I have known for many years, I am
visiting your convent, where I have got acquainted with your work and its
results. With a small American group we see the considerable work you are
performing here not only for yourselves, but also for people, for God’s
Church.
The first visit of the Most Holy
Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II occurred in 1993. His Blessing to
both sisters, and all those that worked here in order for the meeting to take
place in new restored
buildings on the newly planned
territory, was a big pleasure and inspiration for our indefatigable works on
creation of the convent.
In his reply to the letter
of thanks of the Most Holy Patriarch, Metropolitan Yuvenaly wrote to
sisters:
- Dear Mother Hegumene
Xenia.
Much, that enraptured His Holiness
in our
general achievements, concerns your earnest works. I forward to you the Message,
as admiration and gratitude to you and the sisters from the Head of our Church.
With love about our God, Metropolitan Yuvenaly.
